Sometimes we do too much thinking

There are days where blogging just seems so easy. You know those days where you start writing an article, and it just comes out of you in a flood of inspiration. The words spill out of you in a matter of minutes and before you know it you have a completed a new article ready to publish on your blog.

Other times you either just can’t get started because your mind is just blank or other times you have numerous ideas that overwhelm your brain, some good, some not so good, but where you are so spoilt for choice and you just can’t decide what to write about. You keep muddling over and over your options, rolling the ideas around thinking about them from every angle, every possible scenario, yet you just can’t settle on what to write.

These brilliant ideas swirling around your head will bring about absolutely nothing if you can’t make your decision and start writing. Your blog’s readers will be waiting vainly for you to post, but you’re just stuck in thinking mode and not action mode.

I’m sure all us bloggers have spent time writing up posts, completed them, but not got around to publishing them. Having spent all that time possibly on research and writing it is very frustrating having put all that time in but then deciding not to post it. This is sometimes because we are not 100% happy with the quality of the post, or the way the intended message is being conveyed. We read it over and over again, but our thought process just tells us its not right, it’s not ready, it won’t hit the mark. You spend so much time analyzing it, but refuse to take the plunge and post it. This is a totally unproductive scenario to us blog writers and our hopes of success.

Aiming for perfection, the perfect end result can often be the reason we keep thinking, calculating, reconsidering. Going around the houses, but not actually doing anything.

So today’s question is are there times when we can think too much? There’s nothing wrong with thinking but it must be balanced with action. Thought and action are the two true fundamentals of blogging, joined by decision making.

Of course it is awesome when our imagination flows, ideas keep popping in your head and there you are nurturing them, developing them, embellishing them to your heart’s content. Your thoughts flow in a never-ending stream. You let your idea twirl in your brain without restraint. Then you make a decision and sever any other possibilities. The end result, a pretty dam good article, now think of all the likes you’re going to get.

Our thoughts are a source of power. They can be positive or negative, lift us or drop us, create happiness or create sadness, or set us free or imprison us. Thoughts are a creative force, but equally they can be a destructive force.

“Thoughts are funny little things, They can make paupers or make kings.” Sid Madwed

With over thinking Some people think themselves into the doldrums, inactivity, disappointment, fatigue, stress  and even illness. They have the propensity of making the simple, complex, the easy, hard, and worse of all blowing a minor issue into a major one. These same people  are expert at snatching defeat from the jaws of victory and wasting so much of their life away by over-analysing everything. Their over thinking keeps them up at night, fretting. They are experts at misinterpreting what people are saying and therefore frequently feel hurt by others. They worry too much and are highly skilled in the art of self-sabotage. They are… the Over-Thinker. They do nothing but  waste time and energy! They spend a lot of time in their own heads mulling over things ad infinitum.

The good news is that it’s easy to recognize when you’re starting to overthink, and you can stop yourself almost immediately. Here are a few things you can do to avoid over thinking.

Make a decision and fully commit to it. Once the decision is made and there’s no going back, you are forced to go with your decision and see it through to the end.

Ask yourself the right type of questions. the ones which will put you into a positive, practical, productive and solution-focused mindset. Acknowledge the problem but be all about solutions.

Consciously find the good. You can interpret most situations in either a positive light or a negative one. Let yourself find the positive interpretation, and you will always then be able to make a decision.

Be more proactive, take action! Get out of the theory and into the practical. The truth is, once you actually start doing something it isn’t as difficult to keep moving; getting started is what holds you back

There’s never a right time to act! “Don’t wait until everything is just right. It will never be perfect. There will always be challenges, obstacles and less than perfect conditions. So what. Get started now. With each step you take, you will grow stronger and stronger, more and more skilled, more and more self-confident and more and more successful.” Mark Victor Hansen

Realise that you can’t be a perfectionist. Striving for perfection is a recipe for disaster, and the sooner you give up  trying the sooner you’ll move past the thing that’s occupying all your thoughts.

Stop wasting time. What do you want? Write it down. Make it happen. Don’t waste another second. Stop thinking… just do it!
